First Baptist Church, PalatkaChurch
On February 6, 1870, twenty-one faithful Baptist met at the home of Rev. Charles (Old Father) Jones at Hotel and River streets and organized the First Baptist Church of Palatka. The first church building was built that summer and dedicated in January, 1871. The church continued to grow during the next 50+ years. On July 11, 1926, the present sanctuary was dedicated and was the tallest building in Palatka at the time. Through the Great Depression, it is reported that 12 men/families made great sacrifice, and some mortgaged their homes to save the church in the economic cri-sis. It was an amazing sacrifice with a vision for tomorrow that we con-tinue to enjoy.
The first Education building was begun on October 25, 1955. The three-story Education building was added in the 1967 to continue the vision of disciple-making and mission education. It was the vision of Dr. John Pelham for First Baptist to have an Activities Center (Christian Family Life Center).
That vision to move forward continues today as we seek to have a Christian Family Life Center and property to accomplish the Great Commission and the Great Commandment for the next generation. Our capital growth campaign began in 2014 and allowed us to make much needed improvements in the church and purchase the former TD Bank building. Phase I funding efforts ended on March 2017, and plans for continued funding and Phase II are in the works.
The future for the First Baptist Church of Palatka is as bright as the promises of God. Just as those who came before us, the faithful service of the membership will bring to pass even more glorious successes.
Our mission is to be disciples who make disciples.
